Open the bottle, machi !. This would be the recurring dialogue among Hyundai workers at its plant in Irrungattukottai, near Chennai, after the plant crossed the awesome milestone of producing its five millionth unit, a Grand i10. Good reason to celebrate, right?
It comes as no surprise though. Hyundai’s onslaught in the Indian market has only spawned success. It did have occasional failures, but hey, failure is the stepping stone to success. The Koreans began their invasion 15 years ago in 1998 wiyh the little Santro, that did set the segment ablaze. Since then, they morphed into this giant brand that has a total investment of Rs 2.7 billion and a production capacity of 6.8 Lakh units. It’s one of the few brands that can hold a candle next to India’s top manufacturer, Maruti-Suzuki.
“The 5 million car roll-out is an important milestone and a symbol of Hyundai’s long-term commitment to the Indian market. We will continue to focus our efforts in the Indian automobile industry thought investments and world-class products,” said B. S. Seo, MD and CEO, Hyundai Motors India.
Great Work, Hyundai!!
